Many Kanien’keha:ka storytellers talked about growing up in close-knit families and relying on their identity for strength when attending post-secondary. Many draw from cultural knowledge like the Seven Generations Philosophy. Looking out for current and future generations is a perspective well known among the Haudenosaunee people. The Seven Generations Philosophy is a firmly rooted understanding and commitment that decisions today will affect not just the next generation but generations to come.

“It seems like it’s a world away sometimes. Half an hour away from town. I never really knew anything about the city, or the people. Academia itself was so foreign to me. Everyone thinks writing essays and taking exams is a very stressful thing, but really isn’t. It’s not that bad. Because we’re all smarter than we think we are, than we know we are.”
